What Causes The Presence Of Redness In Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: I have had red in my stool and I wonder if it could be from eating raspberries recently ? They have never caused redness in my stools before though. I recently had a bad case of diverticulitis though. Should I be concerned ?

Brief Answer:
Lower Gastrointestinal Bleed

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Raspberries should not cause lower Gastro Intestinal (G.I) bleeding. If the stool is red then its most likely a lower G.I bleed as upper G.I bleeding presents with blackish stool referred to as melena. Hemorrhoids, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease , parasitic infestation, colon cancer , all of these can present with lower G.I bleed. Diverticulitis fever, tenderness, intense pain with elevated white count and is unlikely if you are asymptomatic. Based on your age my major concern would be to rule out colon cancer. You should consult a gastroenterologist or proctologist. A stool for ova and parasite , anoscopy, DRE ( Digital Rectal exam ) and/or colonoscopy can be advised accordingly to better isolate the cause for any bleeding.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
