Posted on Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Question: Hello doctor,
My daughter is a 4 month old. From last 4 days she's having a facial swelling on right side (from eye to cheeks) and it goes vanished after few hours. She is not having any redness on swelling. Today I have done her Urine routine test and it is normal. I m giving her few syrups, A to Z, vitamin D3 and cough syrup Hatric 3. Is anything serious?

Brief Answer:
Not related to Vitamin D and seems to be an allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I have gone through the history you have provided. This swelling is definitely not related to Vitamin D drops you are giving.

Usually single side swelling is not related to high protein loss in the urine and the urine test was not indicted. If it was related to protein loss in the urine, then it should have been bilateral (both sides of the face and eyelids).

I feel that it should be an allergy and it is very common in this age group and it is called eczema. There will not only be transient swelling but also some amount of redness over the affected cheeks too.

The other possibility is that kids of this age group when they sleep on the same side for long time, can develop this transient swelling and it can go off automatically once position is changed.

I suggest you upload an image of the kid if you please. Skin conditions are best diagnosed only after seeing directly. I suggest you to upload photographs of the same on this website, so that I can guide you scientifically.

Brief Answer:
Not eczema or sweeling of eye lids

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I don't see any abnormality in the photograph as of now. But this doesn't look like eczema either as there is no rough skin over the cheeks. There is no swelling of the eye lids either.

I feel this could be a normal finding.

There is another entity - called hemihypertrophy of the face. But in this condition one half of the body will be large and not temporary like this.
But as of now nothing to worry and I would like to follow up the case.

Hello doctor,

Thanks for yr valuable time.

I have one more query. If you will see the picture minutely then you will see the swelling below the right eye. Is this normal?

Best regards, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Looks like an insect bite

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I am sorry, I was concentrating more on cheeks and upper eye lids. After you say I can see the swelling but it doesn't look like something going on seriously. It looks morel like a insect bite or mosquito bite.

I suggest you to wait for it to reduce by itself.

If it is becoming red or increasing in size or if it is itchy and irritating her, you can use Syrup Cetrizine at 2ml once daily for 2 days.
