Brief Answer:
Need to find the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Swelling in legs can be pitting or non-pitting type of edema.

From your description it seems non-pitting (solid to touch) edema with pain. It can be myxedema due to thyroid issues, filariasis, allergies, post-operative, postthrombotic, scleroderma, etc. Thus causes can be many. I would suggest that you see a surgeon or internal medicine specialist for this issue. He will be able to examine her and suggest tests. Medicines can be prescribed only after finding the cause. In the meanwhile, she should keep her legs slightly elevated while sleeping. She can also take painkillers like ibuprofen if pain is not controlled.

Venous insufficiency can cause painful edema but is pitting type (pits on pressure). Diuretics are usually prescribed if the edema is pitting type.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
