What Causes Soreness In The Neck Not Responding To Massages?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: Hello. Having problems with soreness and tenderness in my neck. It is worsened when I sleep at night. In addition to the neck, I have soreness and achy feeling running through back of head, mostly lower back portion of the head. Feels almost fluish. Parts of my scalp are tender to the touch. Mostly by the ears. No fever, no fatigue. Going on for nearly a month. Not sure if this is chiropractic issue with neck or perhaps should seek further with doctor due to head tenderness, ache and soreness all around. Went to ENT 6 weeks ago. Thought maybe this was sinus but he said I look clear.

Brief Answer:
needs management and work up, likely migraine

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Neck and occipital muscles soreness not responding to traditional massages and cleared for any sinuses issues by an ENT need further evaluation. To me it sounds like a migraine headache. Tension headaches are the commonest cause of these headaches. You may need to see a neurologist and take some medications for the relief. Skeletal muscle relaxants and acetaminophen is a good start.

One other possibility of such presentation is occipital neuralgia but that has a history of either diabetes mellitus or arthritis, cervical disc problems, neck tension and tight neck muscles etc.

Above mentioned are all the differentials which your doctor will narrow down and sort out for the likely one and i am hopeful it will be a mere migraine headache.

Meanwhile you can try to get some relief by
Applying heat to the neck.
Rest in a quiet room.
Massage tight and painful neck muscles.
Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, like naproxen (such as Aleve) or ibuprofen (such as Motrin).

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
