What Causes Soreness In Calf Muscles In A Person With A Family History Of DVT?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: Went in to see my doctor yesterday for a possible dvt in right calf. Venous Doppler showed nothing today even though he started me on xaralto last night just in case due to a heavy family history . Healthy 40 yr female no smoke drink etc. worried because I fly tomorrow on long haul flight . He said it's ok and no need for xaralto since Doppler clear . But I am stressed due to my moms history of sticky platelet and 6 PE's on warfarin and my aunt thrombocythemia and calf still sore. No swelling or bruise and no injury. Should I take Asa just in case 81 mg to be safe?

Brief Answer:
Considerations.

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I can appreciate that you are dealing with a significant amount of anxiety and concern regarding your current symptoms. Fortunately the Doppler study has ruled out the presence of a deep vein thrombosis. It's possible that there may be more of a muscular issue that is causing the symptoms you are experiencing.

I don't see any indication at this point to continue anticoagulation - just as your doctor has recommended. Aspirin would be reasonable but is not absolutely necessary. I would recommend that you stretch and walk every 30 to 45 minutes while you are on the flight as physical activity is just as important as any other means of preventing blood clots.

In the long term I would continue to focus on healthy exercise habits and maintaining a healthy weight to help minimize your risk for developingblood clots in the future.

Again, regarding the aspirin, I don't think it would cause any harm and it would not be unreasonable to try this on a daily basis while you're on the flight and traveling.

Thank you again for sending your question. I wish you all the best and continued good health.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
