Question: I am a 26 year old female. Help please!!! I was perfectly fine, on Tuesday I got the flu vaccine and wenesday I woke up with severe soar throat and ache all over my body, I also had a fever of 100.5. That night my ears started to pop and clog during the night which caused me ear pain when they would pop. On thursday i went to my physician he looken at my throat and ears and found nothing. He said I had no swelling/redness is my throat and that my ears didn't look red either he just saw ear wax in both of them. He sent me home saying i had nothing but to take motrin for pain if anything. That thursday night i was so miserable my throat kept hurting and I had so much pressure in my head that when i lay down to sleep the pressure went to my ears and cloged them worse and they were popping all night which cause alot of ear pain. I was soo miserable that i started taking a dicongestant "Pseudoephedrine 60mg/Triprolidine 2.5 mg" that i had at home. Friday I slept better My ear pressure went away and my ears no longer hurt, my throat still hurt. Saturday I develop a cough, I dont have mucous is a dry cough. Im miserable my throat keeps hurting really bad, only ibuprofen calms it a little but once is out of my system it starts hurting really bad again. My throat when is hurts it feels super dry nor water or anything else calms it, cough/throat drops are not helping. I still have a dry cough so i stoped taking the "Pseudoephedrine 60mg/Triprolidine 2.5 mg". My throat still hurts, still have a dry cough, and my ears are beggining to clug and pop again. Please help....... Will prefer an ENT specialist

Brief Answer:
Viral infection following flu vaccine is common...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query. I'll try my best to help you with this problem.

The symptoms of flu following the flu vaccination is common. Your doctor could not appreciate any significant signs of infection because it was just the starting stage.

Do not worry! This bout of infection is to boost up your immunity. Viral infection is usually self limiting and will wean off within a week.

My sincere advice to you is:
1. Drink plenty of warm water
2. Do steam inhalation, this reduces the congestion in the nose, around the Eustachian tube and the vocal cords
3. Use saline nasal spray as frequently as possible, this keeps your nose moist and opens the clogged Eustachian tube
4. Give voice rest, this will reduce cough
5. You can try taking herbal cough syrup made of ivy leaf extract
6. Avoid chilled food & beverages/coffee/smoking/alcohol if any
7. Continue taking ibuprofen for pain and paracetamol for fever

Hope I have answered your query. I'll be available for the follow up queries.

Should i keep taking "Pseudoephedrine 60mg/Tripolidine 2.5 mg" or should i not take that again. It did helped dicongest my ears in one day but i developed a dry cough after it. I cant tell if the cough was due to that medication or not.

Brief Answer:
Please hold on pseudoephedrine...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

Hold on Pseudoephedrine at this stage, because it will dry the secretions and makes the throat irritable.

Please follow rest of the measures as adviced in my previous response.

I wish you good health and good luck.
