default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: hello, i have diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in recent weeks which had made me very weak and animic. Although the colitis symptoms have improved greatly in past week now i am experiencing extreme pain in my legs mainly at nightime, have noticed swelling. The only medication that i am currently taking for the colitis is prednisone which I have been on for about 6 weeks now. Been experiencing the pain for three days now, not sure how to approach this. Will not be i touch with my GI Dr until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

Brief Answer:
Hello. This could either be a vein problem or a side effect of prednisone

Detailed Answer:
Hello. My first thought is that this could be a deep venous thrombosis problem--a clot in a deep leg vein.

Otherwise, it could be from fluid retention from the prednisone.

A final problem could be low potassium, a vitamin D deficiency, or low calcium

You need to have your doctor address this right away with an exam, blood work, and, if warranted, Doppler venous flow studies of your legs.

Please let me know if you need to discuss this any further
