What Causes Severe Pain In The Left Shoulder Area Just Below The Clavicle?

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Aug 2016
Question: I have pain in the left shoulder just below the clavicle. One doctor I went to said it is probably the joint just the below the clavicle. I had an MRI of the left shoulder, but the MRI only showed the area near/around the deltoid/rotator cuff. It did not go far enough to the right to show where the pain originates. I sometimes feel a clicking noise if I raise my arm. Just wondering what to do? Since the MRI doesn't go into that area, do I need a CT? Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain just below the clavicle can be due to osteoporosis or a joint pain below the clavicle. Any serious issue is not likely in this area. The clicking noise can be due to a decrease in the joint lubricants. In addition to prolotherapy, you can have oral joint lubricant supplements, mild pain killers and do a regular hot compress in the area. Getting a bone mineral density (BMD) done will help in getting an idea regarding your osteoporosis.
A CT scan is not needed right now. It is likely to resolve with above mentioned supplements and hot compress.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for answering. Push ups are a big part of my workout routine, which I am not doing. At what point would you say it would be safe to go back to doing push ups? A few weeks after no pain? Never?
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
After the pain subsides.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can resume with push ups after a few weeks when the pain subsides completely. Do start gradually so as not to put extra stress on your joints.
