default
Posted on Thu, 9 Oct 2014
Question: I have severe pain in the rectum. Don't believe it is hemorrhoids because I don,t feel any lumps. It feels very raw and is made worse with bowel movements and cleaning. There is infrequent blood on the tissue after cleaning.

Brief Answer:
Anal fissure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Severe pain in the rectum which gets more intense when the stool is passing the rectum and bright red blood on the tissue are very characteristic symptoms of anal fissure. This condition is usually caused by constipation and/or hard stool. Fissure is nothing more than a wound in the rectum. This wound is very painful as the area it is present is very sensitive. It can bleed from time to time.
The treatment should be started from medicines.
To make it healed you should follow this steps:
- increase fiber rich products and start probiotic intake to make stool softer and to avoid constipation
- do not push hard on stool
- have warm sitz baths with Oak Bark twice a day
- use Nitroglycerine cream 2-3 times a day for 2 months (it may cause headaches- in such case you should replace it with Nitrendypine tablets twice a day)
- wash your rectum after every stool
If such treatment wont help in about 2 months, surgery should be performed.

To confirm this diagnosis you should consult proctologist and have simple rectal examination.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
