What Causes Severe Headache, Ear Ache And Knee Pain Post Knee Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Sep 2016
Question: Ive been to the doc twice. He diagnoised me with an ear infection in both ears. First round I was given a Z pack, it didn't help. second time I was given, Amox/k Clav 875 mg. Neither helped. I had the ear infection about a month before going to the doctor, first symptoms was ear ache and swollen gland in the right ear. No pain in the left. I didn't go in because I was having knee surgery and the swelling and pain subsided just before surgery. about 2 weeks after surgery it came back. I woke up with a horrible headache that felt like my head would explode. Since then I've learned the horrible headaches are positional. I only get them when laying flat and this is antibiotic resistant. I don't know what to do I can't sleep laying down or end up in so much pain. Obviously the doctor is missing something. Both times he's seen me he says it's a bad infection in both ears. Please help.

Brief Answer:
Needs ENT review and immediate work up

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it seems that you have already been through alot and hopefully you will be recovering from your knee surgery by now and feeling improvement by now. As far as your Ear symptoms are concerned these can't be ignored as such and trial of oral antibiotics has failed so it necessitates the need for an urgent ENT review to look for any signs of extensive fungal or bacterial infection extending into skull bone and you may need to have Intravenous antibiotics and MRI or CT to look for extension of infection alongwith cultures and routine blood screens. For temporary relief you can use OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
