What Causes Severe Dizziness?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: SO I have been feeling really dizzy and just off for the past 8 weeks. ITs constant but when I have to focus in on something concentrate its at its worst. Im also congested. SO I went to an ENT got prescribed antiobiotics and it did nothing. I got a ct scan to see if needed sinus surgery. My sinuses are fine! My ears always feel congested but from the scan they look fine. I got allergy tested. Im not allergic to anything. I have had these dizzy spells off and on for 2 years. Congestion comes with the spells. THey usually last 6 to 10 weeks. How do I diagnose this and do the necessary things to correct the problem. What could it be?? I am dying to get this figured out. I have taken every OTC medication and decongestant sprays and nothing helps. Any ideas?? ANd what should be my next step??

Brief Answer:
Eustachian tube dysfunction...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through the history thoroughly and understood your problem. I will try my best to help you with this.

1. The recurrent nasal congestion could be secondary to Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). The cause of ETD are recurrent sinusitis, nasal allergy, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), smoking, etc. As the allergy and sinusitis has already been ruled out, the other probable cause could be GERD. With proton pump inhibitors and prokinetics, this can be taken care of. Steam inhalation and saline nasal spray can help in alleviating the symptoms.

2. A thorough history and a complete evaluation are required to identify the cause of dizziness. Identifying the cause of dizziness is the toughest part, but, once done, it’s easy to treat. It requires a team work involving an internist, neurologist, ENT and ophthalmologist to identify the cause. Identify an institution which runs a vertigo clinic and get yourself thoroughly evaluated.

3. Ensure you have a sound sleep. Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. Avoid chilled food and beverages, coffee/tea, fizzy drinks and smoking.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
