Question: i have been diagnosed with thrombocytopenia. But i am experiencing constant burning of the feet on the top, toes, and especially on the underside pads of the great toe. Treatments for atheletes foot bring temporary relief, but that's all.
The most severe burning is around the base of nail on the great toes and balls of the feet.

Any suggestions? And what specialty of practice shoul i see.

Brief Answer:
Various causes...

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

This could be due to a number of causes... Vascular insufficiency of the lower limbs can cause such symptoms along with the swelling, this can be diagnosed by a duplex ultrasound test to check on the venous and arterial circulation of the lower limbs.

Other causes include renal insufficiency and hypothyroidism as both can also cause the burning sensation along with the swelling, so I would recommend that you get a blood test for kidney functions including blood urea nitrogen and creatinine together with a blood test for thyroid hormonal profile including T3, T4 and TSH.

if the above causes are excluded then this could be due to vitamin B12 deficiency which results in neuritis and burning sensation of different parts of the body. This can be easily diagnosed by a blood test for vitamin B12 level and can easily be treated by supplements.

I would also recommend that you check on your blood levels of fasting and postprandial glucose to exclude diabetic neuropathy.

Hope I have answered your query.
