What Causes Recurrent Bladder Infection?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Question: I just went to my GP today. Had a bladder infection about 3weeks ago. He gave me a course of antibiotics to use, 5days. The infection is back. Today he took a papsmear and gave me various other tablets to use. I had breast cancer, which is now in remission. Currently on tamoxifin for the next 5 years. Should i be worried and go see a gynae.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should see a GYN doctor

Detailed Answer:
Certainly I am biased because I am an OB/GYN, but consider that:
1. You are a 53 year old female
2. You have a history of breast cancer, on tamoxifen
3. You were treated for a UTI that apparently did not resolve
4. There are other causes for UTI symptoms that are GYN related and to which you are at greater risk being postmenopausal

There is never anything wrong with a second opinion, especially when it comes down to pelvic symptoms. Maybe it does not seem to be resolved because it is not a UTI? You are at risk for common vaginal infections that can mimic a UTI and the antibiotics being used increase your risk for these infections even further! For example, you are now on Metronidazole and Candaspor, both used to treat the most common vaginal infections (BV and yeast). This is all the more reason to go in to get another opinion with a GYN.

Please let me know if this helps!
