What Causes Persistent Pain In Wrist?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Jun 2015
Question: Hello. I have pain in my left wrist, just under the area in line with my thumb. It's been there for about a week. I've iced it, put on some ben-gay type ointment on, but no change. I'm on anti-inflammatory which helps some, but the pain is still there. I also have carpel tunnel in my left wrist and have been wearing a brace at night only. I first notice the discomfort about a week ago and thought maybe the brace I was wearing some how contributed to my discomfort. Prior to wearing the brace the pain was not there. I've been wearing the brace for about 3-4 mos.

Brief Answer:
Arthritis likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the wrist that you have is likely to be due to an inflammation or arthritis in the joint. The pain is not likely to be related to wearing of brace as you have been using it for 3-4 months.
Oral anti inflammatory and a hot compress will help in reducing the pain. Avoid all painful wrist movements. You can consult an orthopedician for stronger medicines f mild anti inflammatory medicines do not help.
I hope this answers your query.

I am on Meloxicam 7.5 mg twice daily. Can I continue to wear my brace at night? I don't need it much during the day. I will use to hot compresses and see how it does. Thank you. Also, how long would it take for the inflammation to go down? A few days or a week?

Brief Answer:
Use brace during the day. +

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
In addition to meloxicam taking a muscle relaxant will help. It is better to wear the brace during the day when you are actively working with the wrist. Using the brace at night while resting will not help.
It can take 1-2 weeks for the inflammation to reduce. Doing a hot compress will help in early healing.
Hope my answer is helpful.
