What Causes Persistent Diarrhea And Pain When Diagnosed With IBS?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: I have been diagnosed with IBS for more than 10 years. I have been prescribed dicyclomine and various other medications throughout the years, but for the last few weeks I have had constant diarrhea and pain on my left side. The only way I can get the diarrhea to stop is to take Imodium, but after a day or so the diarrhea returns and the pain is constant. I had a CT scan and was told that I had mild constipation on my left side which was surprising because of the diarrhea. He also said I could have scar tissue from a previous surgery for pelvic prolapse. I really don't know what question to ask, but based on my symptoms can you offer any help on the direction I should take to find relief? Thank You.

Brief Answer:
IBS: Have you not been treated with mebeverine? or Cisapride?

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

I'm Dr. Neel Kudchadkar and I'll help you in your health issues.
I have read your question very carefully and have given much thought to it.

I understand that you take Imodium for loose motions, and have tried Dyclomine for the cramps. I want you to understand that IBS is such an illness that constipation and loose motions alternate in it. There is nothing to be surprised then at the results of the CT Scan.

I am surprised that the doctors did not give you two inexpensive easily available medicines called as cisapride and mebeverine. Are you sure you are not taking these medicines?

If not, please go to your doctor, and get a prescription for these two drugs.

The doctor may give you something better like Drotaverine, depending on his or her opinions and availability.

Your problem is very easily resolved with these 2 essential medicines.

Do write back to me about this.
Take care,
Dr. Neel Kudchadkar
