Posted on Sat, 18 Jun 2016
Question: I have a pain in my side about halfway up between hip & armpit. I think my injury resulted from reaching over to close sliding the passenger sliding door from the drivers' seat in my mini-van.Is it a strained muscle of some sort? I have to be careful on how I position myself to sleep.

Brief Answer:
Please apply spray or ointment containing muscle relaxant and pain relief

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. It is likely that you have muscle spasm due to the activity from sliding the door of the XXXXXXX van.

2. Such a muscle spasm usually stays for 3 to 5 days and the pain and discomfort is felt more after 24 hours.

3. You can get a spray or ointment containing muscle relaxant and pain relief from your pharmacy and apply over the hurting area. This will help in recovery from the muscle spasm. If pain is severe then you can continue taking oral pain relief.

4. Please sleep with the hurting side upwards and keep your arm supported on a pillow to avoid discomfort.

5. Avoid using the arm and doing any heavy physical activity for some days and you should recover well.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

The problem is that the suggested position gives me the most trouble. Should I sleep on a recliner?

Brief Answer:
Please get examined clinically if the pain does not improve in a week

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Many patients start feeling better from day 3 and by a week, they are back to normal.

2. Few complain of persistent discomfort and this happens if enough rest is not allowed or if there is severe muscle spasm.

3. If you are having a persistent pain even after a week then a clinical examination is suggested. There can be extension of injury to the scapular region or shoulder joint and you might require detailed investigations and physio therapy for treatment.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
