What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation Throughout The Body?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: My mother, 60 yrs, was going quite fine until for last few days(around 2 weeks) she was claiming that she is not getting much strength in her body. Latter she started to claim a numbing sensation whole throughout her body. Now she added with that a uneasy (?tickling) sensation all over her body. This uneasy(short of tickling) sensation has been so problematic now that at the time of writing this , she can not sit/stand/sleep for few minutes at a stretch.
Please suggest- mom need immediate attention.
Thanks and Regards.,

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi & Welcome .
Thanks for posting your query on Health Care Magic.
I really appreciated your concern for your beloved mother.

After having gone through the history given in your query, your mother seems to be having the features suggestive of Vitamin B12 deficiency. Since Vitamin B12 in found in foods of animal origin- milk, cheese, meat, egg, fish, so there is a possibility of its deficiency if her diet is pure vegan.
Had I been her treating physician I would have recommended the following lab tests to confirm the diagnosis like:

1. Complete blood count (CBC)
2. Reticulocyte count
3. LDH level
4. Serum Vitamin B12 level

If it is found to be due to deficiency she may need Inj Vitamin B12 given intramuscularly daily for 7 days then weekly for at least 6 months.

If no symptoms but low levels you can improve her diet and give the vitamin orally 1500mcg once a day for 6months.

Hope the suggestions given above would be useful in getting her properly evaluated clinically by a physician to find out the cause of deficiency and to begin the effective treatment.

Should you have any follow up query, I shall be glad to answer it.
Best regards.
