What Causes Muscles Spasms In Calf, Arms And Thighs?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: Having calf and thigh spasms, I wouldn't call them cramps. Arms also go into spasm when I move a certain way. Not necessarily at night. Happens during the day when I'm in the car, tub or just sitting. I'm in good health, walk 2 to 3 miles a day, sleep well and good diet. Little worried, ms in family.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to deranged levels of calcium, magnesium or other electrolytes !

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to the house of perfect clinicians online. We are happy to assist you and it's real pleasure for me that I can be of some help for you today.

I have carefully reviewed your health query and can well realize the sensitivity of the issues you have. It seems to be due to fluid and electrolyte imbalance. Our muscles especially the muscles of limbs are very sensitive to small changes in the inside and outside environment of muscle tissues.

Calcium, magnesium and other electrolytes in fluid compartment of the body play vital role in establishing normal muscle functions. ATP is the name of energy that is flowing in body and is responsible for maintaining muscular movements. Muscles depend mainly on glucose to produce this ATP (the energy). Insulin plays a vital role in transportation of this glucose to cells of muscle tissues in our limbs.

If there is either an issue with fluids and electrolyte balance, glucose levels in our blood, or Insulin defects--- All can end up in muscle performance issues and symptoms like you are facing are then very common.

Please consult your Primary care Physician for thorough evaluation and specific lab tests to diagnose the issue. Once diagnosed, it can be resolved with proper care and supplementation if needed. I am here to assist at any step in this process of management. You may ask me anytime if further assistance is needed.

Drink plenty of fluids. I considered this as a problem. Have a problem with low blood sugar, have that under control . I tend to "graze" during the day, eating through out the day. Works for me. Spasms and constriction during certain movements. Concerned

Brief Answer:
Serum electrolyte testing is needed!

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for providing some more details of your health related background. It helps in management strategy.

Well, when there are movement related spasms and constrictions, it may be due either to fluid and electrolyte imbalance or there is something related to the nerves supplying muscle groups being used in specific movements.

I have already discussed role of sodium, potassium and others. In your case your Physician will go for the Serum and Electrolyte levels, thyroid and parathyroid gland function testing, Vit. B12 and Vit D levels.

Once diagnosed through investigations, Your Physician may treat you in the best possible way. Once you get these lab reports, please upload here for review. I will be happy to comment on all of them. Have a blessed time ahead.

Regards!
