What Causes Muscle Twitches In Calf?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: I'm a 58 year old woman, moderately overweight (20 lbs), I ride horses 3-6 times a week and walk if I'm not riding. I eat a relatively low-fat diet--lean meats and vegetables, and drink a glass or two of wine with dinner most nights. I am healthy, and have no chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, etc. I have had a check-up w bloodwork (all normal) in the last 6 months. I do take low-dose HRT's for mind-bending hot flashes. For three weeks, I have had a painless, but very persistent muscle twitch in my calf, in the back, just below my knee. Icing it, or taking anti-inflammatories doesn't stop it. The twitch is visible to the naked eye. There is no history of rhematoid issues in my family, although I do have joint stiffness, which I attribute to the highly athletic life I lived until my early 50's, running and dogsledding. What is the cause of the twitch and how can i get rid of it?

Hypocalcemia, trauma.calcium supplementation. rest

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

First of all I appreciate your life style.
I went through the query and understood your concern.

The cause of painless muscle twitches may be due to 2 common causes
1. Hypocalcemia.. you need to check for your serum calcium level. It is more common in post menopausal period. Supplementation with Vitamin D and calcium will help you. Since the twitches are present in both lower limbs this may be the probable cause.
2. Any recent injuries or trauma or even over work. Since you do horse riding any injury to the nerves that supply the calf muscle while riding can also presents with muscle twitches. For this you should give rest with good hydration.
So get checked for the same.

I hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask for any further queries. I will be glad to answer them.

Wish you good health.
Regards
