What Causes Muscle Cramps, Headache, Neck Pain And Facial Swelling?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Aug 2016
Question: My husband had some some of infection on his ear and face. Face was swelling. Took antibiotics, then two weeks later, got another infection on the other side of his face where the whole side swelled up so much that his eye was swollen shut. Was treated for an infected hair, lanced it open and got some drainage after alot of pushing around, put on antibiotics again. Swelling down, but now he is getting muscle cramps, headaches (has had most of the time), neck hurts on and off and feels like a stinging in his check on and off. It hurt when his heart would beat. Once again, this just started last night and he said it is better today.....can't get him to go to doctor again. I guess first of all - Why the infections? He is a very clean person. 2nd: Is it possible that his heart could have been affected by the infections? 3rd: what is our next step?

Also his throat hurts

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that his symptoms seem to be related to a persistent infection associated to inflammation.

You should know that recurrent infections are usually caused in patients with low immunity or by an infectious agent with high aggressiveness.

Did he perform a bacterial culture of the drained pus?

Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with his attending physician for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- complete blood count
- inflammation tests (CRP, sedimentation rate)
- CPK (muscular enzymes)
- brain CT scan or MRI
- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound to examine his heart structure and function.
- a chest X ray study
- a throat discharge bacterial culture

These tests are needed to investigate if the infection/inflammation is still active or the possible cause of the infection. From the other hand, it is important to determine if there is any possible sinus infection.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
