What Causes Mildly Raised Body Temperature When On Medication For Thyroiditis?

Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: My 21 years old daughter has mildly increased body temperature every evening (37.1-37.2 C) within last three months. She doesn't have any other symptoms, except of mild chills when the temperature increases. Routine investigations didn't reveal any abnormalities. She fills well and continues daily activities as usual. She receives oral contraceptive and L thyroxin for thyroiditis, but her thyroid gland hormones are well controlled. Could you please, advise what investigations should be done to determine the cause? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Thyroiditis is the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
Such low rise in body temperature is a common problem with thyroiditis.
If all the investigations are normal then nothing to worry. This should settle on its own.
However I would like to see her all investigations.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

TSH; FT3 and FT4 are normal. Antibodies are increased, but remained on the same level as three years ago when thyreoiditis (Hasimoto) was diagnosed. her endocrinologist exclude thyreoiditis as a cause... Would you suggest to investigate for Hepatatis B; C HIV; Citomegalovirus?...

Brief Answer:
As routine work up

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
These investigations are done either on routine basis or if there is any indication.
If her Liver Function test is deranged then she should go for Hepatitis B and C testing.
HIV testing is not indicated in case of fever. CMV infection is self limited so not required.
Probably Has him pro's thyroiditis is responsible for her low grade fever.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
