Question: I have been seeing "lightening like" flashes on the outside of my left eye.

The flashes you are seeing could be due to many reasons .
One it could be due to local problem in the eye ,due to retinal detachment. Please see an ophthalmologist first to rule this out.
If it is negative, then you may need to do a CT scan of the brain.
I would also like to know a few more details like do you have any headache or blurring of vision or do you see any floaters?
Initial early ophthalmology evaluation is highly recommended.
