Brief Answer:
May be because of viral/bacterial infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your query and I think I understand your concerns.

The sudden onset of pain at multiple sites could well be a manifestation of infection most likely viral/bacterial. Muscle Inflammation may be a cause and this may be confirmed by blood test for muscle enzymes, such as creatine kinase.

This condition usually resolves of its own in few days to week time. If this is the case, then all he needs is a symptomatic and supportive treatment like paracetamol for fever and so on.

How are his vital organs functioning, like heart & lungs?
Hope this helps and wishing him early recovery.
Regards

My son has had knee issues since last summer and just in the past weeks has had pain in his joints. He has had a lot of tests run and they keep coming back negative. My mother, his grandmother, had RA. But she didn't get that until late in life. He is getting a consult with a rheumatologist on Wednesday.

Are there any independent labs he can send blood to be tested for lyme disease and vitamin D deficiency? He asked me to ask you that?

Hello
It’s good to see you
I have gone through your reply carefully and would like to help for independent lab at XXXXXXX Arbor but I do not have any direct reference. You may search on yellow pages or better would be on Google search engine.
Rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age. Please tell me about the blood test-serum RA factor, AntiCCP antibody (specific for rheumatoid arthritis). If not done please get them done.
Wishing him good health.
Take care
