What Causes Insomnia And Muscle Twitching When Diagnosed With Paranoid Schizophrenia?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jun 2016
Question: I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia on 2013. I took medication like pacetane(2 mg) and sizodom(6mg) for 6 months. After few years I was again suffering from schizophrenia. Sometimes I have very severe episodes and sometimes not.
But since 2015 , I have been having a rigid shoulder and back that don't go away. I am sometimes drpping things. But for these last 2 months, I have been having insomnia and muscle twitching all over the body (they are painless though). Have consulted a local doctor and he suggested taking pacetane and risperdone plus(2mg both twice a day) Though I can sleep now but the muscle twitching don't go away. The twice occur all over the body. Should I worry about some dangerous disease like ALS or parkinson or MS. I am very very scared. Please suggest me all the test that I have to go through in order to diagnose my underlying disease and also give your valuable feedback.

Brief Answer:
EMG test would help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXX,

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist and would be happy to assist you.

I have noted your clinical details.

Muscle twitching can occur in ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), however, it is not that it can not occur with other diseases. The most common cause of muscle twitching is benign fasciculations syndrome (BFS). As the name suggests, it is a harmless disease and gets better on its own. Muscle twitching does not occur in Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis.

Regarding ALS, in addition to muscle twitching, there would be muscle weakness and thinning of muscles. To exclude ALS, you should get an EMG (electromyography) test done, which can be done by a Neurologist.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
