What Causes Hot Flashes, Weakness, Nausea And Memory Issues In An Elderly Woman?

Question: Hi, I have some questions about my mom's symptoms. She lives alone and is not feeling well. I am trying to decide if she needs to see a doctor or not. She lives out of state so I cannot help her. She is 75 years of age and has issues with memory and depression/anxiety. (She is taking antidepressants.)

Her current symptoms since yesterday: Waves of hot flashes that come and go, weakness and nausea. She might be shaky- she said something about feeling worse standing that laying down. She thinks it might be that she ate lettuce without washing it yesterday. So, it might be food poisoning as an obvious guess, but I want to make sure it is not a circulatory heart issue or something else of concern. Do you think she needs to see a doctor today, or can she wait and see and go in a couple of days if she is still not feeling well?

Brief Answer:
food poisoning

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

Your mother who is 75 has recently been experiencing hot flashes with nausea after eating in properly cleaned lettuce. I think your mother is right that she may have food poisoning from the salad. Unwashed vegetables and fruits are frequently teh culprit for food poisoning. They are usually viral and will resolve in a day or two. During this time she should stay at home and drink plenty of fluids. If she were to develop intractable vomiting or high fever then she should be seen in an ER or urgent care setting.

In summary
1. food poisoning or infection
2. Usual viral
3. Drink plenty of fluids and rest
4. Seek medical attention if high fever or intractable vomiting
5. Symptoms may last 1-2 days
