Question: This morning out of no where I felt there was something caught in my throat. After eating bread and drinking hot coffee it was still there, so I stuck my fingers down my throat at felt a small bud which I pressed on and it started to bleed so there was blood in my saliva. It feels like its moved down my throat. I also gargled with mouth wash. This appeared out of no where. One minute nothing the next this bud in my throat. I recently quit smoking after 3 yrears and I'm 62. What could this be? Regards, XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Need work up and correlation. Fluids till then only for intake

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Feeling of foreign body sensation of something stuck in the throat that hard to lead to bleeding while eating simple bread and coffee is unlikely. But the shortness of the history being instantaneous and out of the blue makes it a likely dysphagia ( difficulty swallowing ) secondary to foreign body or a simple spasm of pharyngeal muscles.

You trying to grab it and feeling it like a bud could likely be normal inflamed structure of the oral cavity like node or tonsillar pillar which got bleeding once you tried to grab and considered it a foreign body and tried to removed it, thus likely causing saliva to be tinged with blood.

Now the history of smoking makes such foreing body sensations very likely and with gastric discomfort or any past history of gastric acid reflux or simple dyspepsia makes the dysphagia and foreign body sensation more likely.

Nut shell beyond all these speculations, go to your doctor, let them run some labs and radiographs and if need be pass an endoscope to sort out if there is any actual foreign body impacted in throat. If so they will pick it out and happy ending.

If no then its the sensation of foreign body, an illusion of foreign body due to the history of smoking and likely gastric discomfort. In that case slight diet and lifestyle modifications and symptomatic care would help.

But first things first, talk to a doctor let them rule out foreign body impaction and manage you accordingly after correlating the history and investigations. Till then prefer fluids only for intake till all worries get cleared.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
