What Causes Frequent Urination After A TURP Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: My father undergone TURP surgery 1 month back. His urination frequency was about every 45 minutes to 1 hour.

After surgery, during first 10 days, his urination frequency remained same. When checked with doctor, he told it will take 1 month to see improvement. He was even having pain while urination.

Now, after 1 month, the pain is more or less gone. But, the frequency has not improved much (around 1 hour). And, while eating most of the regular food, he is feeling sour taste.

Are these normal symptoms? How long does he need to wait to v see improvement.

Brief Answer:
frequency will come down slowly

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It is not unusual to find patients having persistent increased frequency of urination post op TURP. This could take a while to settle down - 3-12 months. Patients also often complain of urine urgency as well. Taking more fluids could be the cause and as also changes in bladder due to prolonged obstruction before surgery. Infection might also cause increase in frequency of urination.
Most important to note here would be his urine flow. If there is no infection and urine flow is very good and he has no residue after he finishes voiding he can be started on medication like darifenacin 7.5mg (available in XXXXXXX as several brands) once daily initially at bedtime and see how he responds. He should not be using this drug if he has narrow angle glaucoma. Within a couple of months frequenc should be better.
If flow is poor or if there is infection taking this drug might not be a good idea. Please get this checked before you start using the medicine.
Hope I have been of help.
