What Causes Frequent Stomach Pain And Bowel Movement In Child?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Mar 2015
Question: My 6 year old daughter teacher just told me that my daughter has been complaining of a stomach ache every afternoon. She says she's fine in the morning. My daughter does complain frequently at home of tummy troubles but most of the time it's that she needa to use the bathroom. The tummy aches at home seem to go quickly and never interfere with her activity level. This has been happening on and off since December. She has been to the doctor since it's started for other things, nor tummy related, and they always feel around her stomach and nothing has been mentioned. Should I be concerned about something cronic?

Detailed Answer:
Hello

If your daughter is complaining of pain abdomen every afternoon then it is really a matter of concern. Frequent abdominal pain may be due to various causes like urinary tract infection, sub acute intestinal infection, some chronic diseases(kidney, liver, intestinal) or it may be functional in origin.

The way you gave the history it does not appear to be a chronic condition as in that condition usually there is loss of appetite and therefore weight loss also.

Although external abdominal examination is very important for diagnosis but it is not always possible to diagnose everything by examination. In such condition investigation helps a lot.

Functional pain abdomen is common in this age group but pain should be labelled as functional only when after proper clinical and lab investigations, pathological causes have been ruled out.

I would suggest you to visit your doctor for this particular symptom and to discuss for the need of urine examination and ultrasound abdomen to find out the cause of abdominal pain.

Regards
