What Causes Food Allergy After Gall Bladder Removal?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: I believe you answered my question, however, I did not receive it (due to extenuating circumstances on my part).

After my sister's gall bladder removal 2 yrs ago, she has not been able to eat. (She is allergic to just about everything at this point.)
She has tried many types of enzymes, but they burn her stomach. (She is 5'4" and weighs about 70 pounds.) She has been living on plain mashed potatoes mixed with cooked carrots. She was topping it with Smart Balance Light "Butter". They have changed the formula of that product and she can no longer use it. So it's potatoes and carrots. Because of this (not Smart Balance) she has been bedridden for over 2 years. She's been to many doctors who prescribe various medications, however, she is unable to tolerate the medicine. She also has food allergies; i.e., dairy, wheat, meat, etc.

Can you help us or point us to an appropriate type of medical specialist? The gastroenter-ologists only prescribe medication which she cannot take.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation your sister is in.

1. You are saying that since she had her gallbladder removed, she has experiencing food allergy. May I know if she ran any test to determine this food allergy?

2. Next, it is normal to get trouble with digestion and bowel movements after gallbladder removal. This is because the secretion of biliary acids into the duodenum.

In such cases, I usually recommend my patients to :
- eat often, small portions and chew up slowly
- avoid fatty foods
- increase water intake

3. If she has not run any test so far, I advise to :
- do abdominal ultrasound to check intra hepatic biliary tract/pancreatic issues
- food allergy / intolerance testing
- discuss with her GI specialist to schedule ERCP.
- upper endoscopy and taking biopsy from D3 section to evaluate current changes in small intestines mucosa
- malabsorption test

4. The specialist to take care of her case and rule out organic problems is gadtroenterologist.

All the best!
