What Causes Flaky And Inflamed Eyelids?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: My eyelids are flaky and inflamed. I went to my dermatologist a couple weeks ago. After looking at it but not diagnosing it he gave me a bottle of steroid cream to put on my eyelids. He said to use it no more than 2 weeks because the eyelids are too sensitive for longer use.. It did help right away but came back as soon as I quit applying it.
My grandmother had psoriasis. Could this be that and what else can I do now?

Brief Answer:
Seborrheic dermatitis; Switch to safer topical calcineurin inhibitors

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.
You seem to have seborrheic dermatitis, which can present as a dandruff like rash/ patch of dry scaly red skin on eyelids.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a steroid responsive dermatosis however the rash may relapse after the steroid is discontinued.
Of course, you cannot use a steroid cream for long on face because of side effects. However, in case of relapses Or mild persistent disease, I would suggest you to use a topical topical calcineurin inhibitor e.g either pimecrolimus 1% cream Or tacrolimus 0.3% ointment, twice daily. They are alternative to steroids and safe for long term use Or for maintenance of improvement.
You may talk to your doctor regarding a prescription for one of these.

What causes this condition and does stress make it worse? I am a caretaker 24/7 for my 88 year old mother and thought the high stress may contribute to the problem.
Thank you
