What Causes Extreme Weakness During Menstrual Cycle?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, I am 31 years and recently had a myomectomy to take out fibroids 3.5 months ago, which were making me very sick and unable to function, during my periods. Although the surgery was successful and has helped things a bit, I still suffer from very heavy periods and pain. I should point out that i have had a history of heavy periods/pain, since i was young, which only got worse, but following a tough personal time, and regular visits to A &E last year, the fibroids were discovered late last year, and 7 taken out. My question is this - the doctor just prescribed Dicynene Etamsylate tablets to help with the heavy blood loss. My period was due last week, and at some point i thought it had come due to some spotting, and feeling sick. So I took one tablet of Dicynene and mefenamic acid. Problem is it seemed the bleeding immediately stopped, and I haven't seen further bleeding. My period is now a week late and I don't know if I should be worried, as I just read on the leaflet that 'it is important that the tablets should not be used before menstrual bleeding starts.'. Did I start taking it to early? and should I be worried? I have had to plan my life around my periods as I can hardly go out, so right now i'm not sure what to do. Your help would be most appreciated

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Taking a single tablet will not stop the bleeding forever. The bleeding should have resumed after 8-10 hours- after the effect of medicine was over. The delay in periods can be due to stress or anxiety or mild hormonal imbalance.
You also need to rule out pregnancy after a urine test. In case the test is negative it is best to wait for a week more and see if the periods start on their own.
In case there is still no bleeding then you can consult your gynecologist and take hormonal treatment to have a withdrawal bleeding.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX Tayal,

Thank you so much for the response. It is most appreciated.

I find this period a bit strange, hence my reaching out. It is to be my 3rd period since my myomectomy, and I took time off for this week cause it was expected, and it hasn't come.

I should clarify that I am not pregnant and there is no chance of it, as I am not in a relationship, and have also had no sexual intercourse.

It is already a week late.

- So are we saying the Diocynene likely isn't the issue? Why does it state on the leaflet that 'It must not be taken before the start of the period'? What's the effect of these?
- Could my periods be trying to still find stability since the myomectomy? Having said that, my last 2 periods were regular and timely
- I have more or less had nothing to stress me, as I have been home, and not sure if its stress. But i know that i have likely been a bit anxious since my period hasn't turned up, and I am due to travel (I can't travel during my periods)
-What sort of hormonal treatment to have a withdrawal bleeding are we referring to? Like a pill?

I look forward to your response and thank you in advance

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Diocynene cannot cause a week's delay. The leaflet says so just to make sure that the drug is not abused to stop the bleeding before it starts. It has side effects like hypertension also.
The periods do take time to settle down after a surgery. Stress and anxiety, change in environmental factors and a hormonal imbalance can also cause such a delay.
Anxiety can cause a delay.
Yes. We need synthetic hormonal pills which are taken for 4-5 days and the bleeding starts after you stop taking them.
Hope my answer is helpful.
