What Causes Excessive Thirst Post Thyroid Gland Removal?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: Hello,
I am an alcoholic and I have not had a drink for over 10 years. I just had an operation to remove my thyroid
and I would not have a clue about the drug used for general anaesthetic. I may be wrong, but I may feel something like the symptoms of feeling "thirsty" . I sthis a normal reaction or should I ask my Doctor for help.
Thank you for you time.

Brief Answer:
side effect from anesthesia

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You recently had general anesthesia from removal of your thyroid gland. The drugs they use for anesthesia will frequently cause a very dry throat and feel like your thirsty all the time. Also during the surgery because you are on a breathing machine you do become slightly dehydrated. So I would strongly urge that you drink plenty of fluids. If this thirsty feeling does not improve then call your surgeon

I hope I answered your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns
