What Causes Excessive Abdominal Bloating In Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Nov 2016
Question: I am 62 years old and in the past week have had blood in my stool three times. It is bright red and mostly on the paper but some fixed in with mucus in the bottom of the bowl. I have had colonoscopy four years ago as part of my regular screening. Its Sunday so my doctor's office is closed. I have been to the doctor recently for excessive gas and bloating and he did not think it was anything to worry about as I have been previously diagnosed with irritable bowl. no pain.

Brief Answer:
Maybe from hemorrhoids

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

As the blood is mostly on the toilet paper and colonoscopy four years back was normal, possibility of cancer or other serious illness is low.

It may be from a local cause like hemorrhoids. An office exam by the doctor in next few days should be OK. Irritable bowel can cause bloating, etc but not bleeding. It can be a polyp but cancer forming from scratch in four years is unlikely.

Hope this helps. I will be available for follow-up.
Regards
