What Causes Dizziness And Nausea After A Sonography?

Question: Hey Thank you so much for taking your time to answer my question. I had a question: today I had my 20 week sono and I had to lay on my back for 30 minutes. I talked to the doc during the sono and felt pretty fine, except a bit of trouble breathing. But when the scan was over and I sat up, I felt extremely nauseous and extremely dizzy to the point I thought that I would faint. Now, I am worried that I harmed the baby by compressing the the blood flow due to the weight of my uterus the whole time during the 30-min long sono. But if that had been the case, would I not have felt nauseous and dizzy and unable to speak during the scan instead of later once the scan was done?I felt ok during the whole scan. It was not too comfortable but I did not feel nauseous and dizzy. And do you think I harmed my baby since the scan took 30 minutes? Once the sono was done, it was an ugly feeling when I sat up and tried to stand up. I would so much appreciate your advice. And I also have usually a low blood pressure around 90/62. I always lay on my left side in bed. Many many thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer: no effect on fetus, just mild hypotension Detailed Answer: Hello mam, Welcome to health care magic forum. I can understand your concern and appreciate the fact that you lie down sideways and not supine which many pregnant patients don't know. In case there was any compression due to lying down posture, it would have manifested during ultrasound in the form of fetal heart rate changes and fetal movements. The dizziness you experienced was a slight hypotension which is common after lying supine for an extended period of time especially when your blood pressure stays low already. So don't worry regards the health of your baby and keep lying down in lateral position. Take care and wish you the best of health.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX First of all, thank you so much for your prompt response and putting my worries to ease. I am truly thankful. Abut the heart rate changes, I cannot tell as she only looked at the heart beat around 10 into the sono and only checked it briefly. It seemed regular and strong. As the soon took almost 30 minutes, I wonder if it did change but she never checked it again. About changes in fetal movements, I don't really know. The lady did not say much during the soon except answered shortly some of my questions. But again, thank you so much for your time and help. I very much appreciate it. Best regards, XXXX

Brief Answer: Fetal movements seen during ultrasound regularly Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for your kind words XXXXXXX Fetal movements are seen by most of radiologists and gynecologists doing ultrasonography side by side while they are doing the anomaly scan because most of the measurements are to be taken in specific positions of the fetus so when there are excessive movements there is difficulty in obtaining those measurements. So there is nothing to worry about any compromise to the health of your baby. God bless you and your baby.
