What Causes Difficulty In Taking Deep Breaths And An Urge To Burp?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: I woke up feeling like I needed to take a deep breath and needed to burp. In spite of taking deep breaths, I continue to feel like a need to take a deep breath. I had breakfast, including coffee. I am currently drinking Diet Sprite in hopes of being able to burp. The symptoms seem to be fading.

Brief Answer:
If they fade, nothing to be worried about

Detailed Answer:
Greetings and welcome to HCM. Thank you for your question. I understand your concern.

This is probably from acute indigestion caused by something irritating you may have had last night before sleep.

Assuming the position of lying down during sleep, increases, to some point, the pressure within the chest and the abdominal cavity. Also, during waking up period, due to sudden changes on the position and due to this increased pressure within the chest, also heart may "fire" a harmless, ectopic beat, which is perceived by the person as a sudden need for deep breaths.

You mentioned that the symptoms are now fading, and this is a good news, which brings me to my opinion that there is nothing to be worried about. Also, I suggest you not to try and take deep breaths in every inspiration nor often, since it is physically not possible and this is true for every person in the world. Please try to relax and take your mind off the thinking that there is something wrong.

I hope my answer is helpful and reassuring. I am happy to help, if you have any follow-up questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
