What Is The Suggestion For Ectopic Beats Especially In Early Mornings?

I am a Gynaecologist 57 years old male.Last month due to severe cold I got severe upper resp.infection & felt bronchospasm for which I took Deriphyllin Retard 300mg for 2 days after which I felt palpitations & ectopic beats.I stopped the drug immediately but I still get ectopic beats especially in the morning hours,4 to 5 beats per minute which almost disappear as I start my routine work.Normally I do not get any symptoms of ectopic beats ,but being a medico I get worried about these beats.I am 5ft3inches in height,58Kg in weight,do regular exercise, non diabetic with normal lipid profile,& do not have a very busy schedule. So I am wondering about the persistent presense of the ectopic beats or were they present & went unnoticed because of absence of symptoms.I am confused. Please enlighten me on my problem & severity of it.Thanks

Hello,

Most the times, these are benign and not dangerous. However, considering your age, it's important that we rule out ischemia as a cause of these.

So you should get an echo, ECG, stress cardiac test etc. These are increased by smoking, excessive alcohol intake, excessive thyroid hormone levels, caffeine etc.

You should also get thyroid profile done to rule out hyperthyroidism. So overall, a likelihood of serious issues is less but needs to be evaluated.

The treatment for is this is beta blockers like tab Metoprolol Xr 25 mg once a day, to be increased gradually. So you may have this is these are troublesome.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
