What Causes Diarrhea, Stomach Cramps Along With Back Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Jan 2015
Question: I believe that I might have excreted a worm. I have had diarrhea all day today and when my stomach started cramping again I went to the restroom and only a thin mucus covered (what looks like a worm) came out. I am 33 weeks pregnant how can I be sure? I also have back pain all day it has subsided by using the restroom but a trip to the hospital told me I have a vaginal bacterial infection as well. They gave me a cream for that. Could this be causing my back pain and if this is a worm what do I do next.

Brief Answer:
De-worming therapy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
First of all, you should give stool for routine examination to confirm presence of ova, parasite or cyst. Even if your stool test is negative or inconclusive, you can take a course of anti-helminthic drug like Albendazole 400 mg orally at bed-time once and then repeat the dose of 400 mg at bed-time 10 days later. Albendazole is compatible drug with pregnancy or moderately safe (human data has no adverse effect on the fetus)

Yes but what I wanted to know was based on the picture does it look like I should be concerned that it is a worm? I wanted to know before I paid for testing that was expensive and unnecessary.

Brief Answer:
It could be Beef Tapeworm(T. Saginata).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

It could be beef tapeworm T. saginata . Are you beef eater anyway?

Stool routine examination will show eggs or proglottids and also will exclude presence of any other intestinal helminthic ova or cyst.

Stool routine examination is anything but expensive.

A single dose of praziquantel (10 mg/kg) is highly effective for Taeniasis. Pregnancy: Category B/PC 2(human data has no adverse effect on the fetus).
