What Causes Dehydration And Infection After Tonsil Removal?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Aug 2016
Question: Hi, i had my tonsils removed 3 1/2 weeks ago now- i had many problems such as bleeding 3 times, dehydration and infection and spent the first two weeks in and out of hospital. I am home now but have a few lingering symptoms making recovery all the more difficult.

- I have a weak swallow when in hospital they put a camera down and identified the swallow was working however it was very weak. I have been doing the excersices suggested and been trying to eat what i can however nothing is changing, i cannot get food over effectively?!

- I have also lost my sense of tatse, everything tastes bitter or of nothing.

The above two combined make it very difficult to eat and drink sufficiently to correct the dehydration. I have lost alot of weight and now weight only 7st 9oz.

Finally today i have developed a red speckly rash down my neck arms and trunk, it goes away and then comes back.

I would be extremely grateful if you could shed some light on any of these issues. As i am still incredibly tired and very keen to get back to normal asap.

Kind regards
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Recovery is a prolonged process depending on several factors..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX Welcome to HCM,

I've gone through your query in details and understand your concern..

Now first of all let me assure you that even in normal post-operative course, post tonsillectomy phase lasts for about 2 weeks to even a month.. but you also had some major complications like bleeding(that too 3 times) as well as infection, which prolonged the hospital visit and stay..

There's nothing to worry much, and considering your at home already for a week, i must let you know that indeed it seems that your throat is healing and your in good hands, so please trust your doctor's advises..

The concerns are categorized as major and minor, as it seems the major part is already over, so these current issues are actually much less severe, probably that's why they're not providing all those explanation, which in other hand can ease your state of mind also..

However, i'm going to let you know them so that you won't remain in darkness and anxiety..

First of all, remain well hydrated, dehydration is quite likely considering the huge amount of pre/post surgical stress and complications you've had so far..

If swallowing cold water is a problem, try to drink lot of XXXXXXX warm water (3-3.5 ltr per day)..

Yes, please continue the exercises, as they are very effective in regaining the power of swallowing..

Well, the main reason for metallic taste is prolonged and multiple antibiotic therapy and secretions(oro-tracheal) , don't worry it'll be over within another few days after the completion of the therapy and simultaneously the normalcy of taste will be regained, but again i'm telling to be patient as you've just been dealt with a quite stressful surgical procedure and multiple complications..

So it'll be a bit prolonged but be assured that it'll be over with as you've already crossed the major phases successfully..

Please let me know about your current food-habits and the detailed diet list which you're following right from morning till night, so that i can help you with that by modifying them accordingly..

Once Again, don't worry about weight loss, it'll be regained within a matter of time only, firstly let's consider getting you back to normalcy as much as possible..

Well the rash can be allergic dermatitis/fungal infection or may be even due to some drug reaction or some thing else, exact diagnosis of that is only possible after a clinical examination but you can upload me some snapshots of the area so that i can get a detailed look at it and guide you accordingly..

You can upload the pictures at the reports section..

You'll get better soon, just have in yourself and in your doctors and care givers..

Let me know all those answers so that I can guide you in this process of well being..

Take Care
Kind Regards
