What Causes Deep Vein Thrombosis?
Question: My friends dad had visited the doctor on 21-Dec-2016 with the complaint of cough and the next day he was admitted in to the hospital as the cough wasn’t subsiding and after running some tests, the doctor had found that there was clotting in the blood and hence was injected to reduce the blood clotting. The clotting of the blood has reduced over the last few days but the patient is still in the hospital as there is still a clot in the leg. Hence the client has requested us for a second opinion from our panel of doctors. The patient is currently in XXXXXXX

Hi,
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist from fortis hospital.
I just went through all the reports you have attached. Your friends dad had clots in lower limb veins (called as DVT- deep vein thrombosis) which occurs because of immortality for long time, or after a long surgery or in old age peoples.
This clot can travel through heart to lungs as has happened in his case. But i see that the clots in lung as not very large & is not causing it to get completely blocked. This is a good news.
Now he needs oral blood thinners(oral anticoagulants) for at least a year after which we check for the presence of clot again in legs & lung. If their are no clots, we stop them gradually.
Currently he must be on some injections which are given over abdomen (blood thinner). Actually starting the oral blood thinner needs some bridging with these injections. When the blood is thinned to a specific level(test to know it is called INR) we stop the injection & continue oral blood thinner.
I wish him a good health & early recovery.
