What Causes Constipation And Back Sprain While On Flexeril And Tylenol?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Jun 2017
Question: I was prescribed Motrin, Flexeril and Tylenol 3 for a back sprain for several days. Back feels better but now I am constipated. I can feel the bowel movement in my rectum, but cannot get it to come out. I took some Magnesium Citrate as recommended by Pharmacist. I have had very two small movements since I took it two hours ago, but I can still feel the fecal matter that I guess is impacted. Any advice would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Impaction as result of medicines side effect.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Thanks for asking the query on this forum.

As per your query for symptomatic relief take-

Miralax - It contains Polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution. It is a laxative solution that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements. It pulls water into the stool within the intestines, causing the stool to soften and become easier to pass. The increased water in the stools can also result in your having more frequent bowel movements than usual.

Manual evacuation of the stool- Any impacted Stool is emptied by gently inserting a finger into the rectum and removing it. This would be done by a nurse or medical staff.

Initially, take Miralax most likely it will clear up your bowel. Once the acute relief is achieved, start taking a laxative like Syp. Lactulose 15-30 ml once daily before going to bed.

This constipation is related to intake of medicines hence drastic life style changes are not required.Once the medicines are weaned off your bowel moments would return back to normal.

Some general suggestions are-
Increase fiber intake in the diet.
Take a probiotic daily.
Drink XXXXXXX warm water before going to the washroom in morning.
Eat a bowl of banana apple and oranges daily.

Thanks.
