What Causes Constant Cough, Headache And Dry Throat In A Child?
Question: hello
my 7 year old has a persistent cough, dry throat, headache, non productive, lungs clear, but it is constant, im not sure if its her tonsils, she does have an issue with enlarged, but also has Pectus excavatum, im not sure if this can cause the chronic, persistent cough? She has had co chest pain in past, denies now, I did have her seen by Cardiologist, she was cleared. does not have any complainants of chest pain in over 6months. We have a wood stove, I have a humidifier in her room, use saline nasal with no relief, my question, should I get her a chest xray or just bring her to ENT since most of her complaint feels like its her "scratchy throat" also complains of headache at times. Asthma, Pectus excavatum or tonsillitis? Also afebrile and never appears to be short of breat, she is very active but constantly coughing, dry hacking cough, no weight loss.

I have gone through your query very carefully and understand your concerns. Such symptoms are common in children and most often is due to viral cause. Making her gurgle with lukewarm water should provide relief. Even if the tonsils are enlarged you need not get apprehensive. Tonsils regress with increase in age and unless she has recurrent episodes of cough and cold (more than seven times a year over three years) surgery is not required. So I would insist neither for an XRay nor for a ENT referral unless the problem is too intense.
Steam inhalation would he helpful. Also give her cetirizine once daily.
