What Causes Cold Sweats And Fainting While Suffering From Cold?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 May 2016
Question: I have the flu--went to a doctor Thursday. symptoms started Wed. have been taking tamiflu and a cough medicine since Thursday evening. Yesterday I felt better and my fever was down near normal when I went to bed. This morning when I woke I slowly got up and within 15 minutes, I went into a cold sweat and became faint. It lasted about 15 minutes. Is this part of the flu or is something else going on. temperature is near normal.
fyi-since then (about 90 minutes ago) I have eaten, and taken meds but feel very sleepy, woozy despite having slept 8.5 hours.

cough med is bromphenir (taken this am), and doc put me on anti-nausea to take prior to tamiflu (also taken this am) ondansetron

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to orthostatic hypotension or intolerance.

There are different factors like dehydration or low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalances, etc. caused by the viral infection that can contribute to this symptomatology.

There is nothing to be worried about.

Nevertheless, I recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical exam and a routine check up including:

- a resting ECG
- a chest X ray study
- lab blood tests (complete blood count for anemia, fasting glucose, blood electrolytes).

Meanwhile, I recommend taking plenty of fluids (water, fresh juices) to avoid dehydration and have some bed rest for some days.

If this episode repeats, I would recommend performing a Head Up Tilt test for orthostatic intolerance.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
