What Causes Catamenial Epilepsy?

Question: Ok.... Here goes.
I'm pretty smart, and have tracked my Catamenial Epilepsy through the years. There must be SOMETHING I can do,

My mother and Great grandmother had epilepsy. My mother had seizures every 2 years like clock work. She died of a heart attack in 1994. My grandmother did not inherit this, but her mother had it.

I went for about 4 years not taking medicine, and seizure free.
I finished college, worked 2 jobs, got married, had kids, (you know the drill)
I have an MS in Environmental Science, I have written a children's book, (Fletcher the Fly), I've been with the Boy Scout Administration for 9 years now, and am a member of the Friendswood Volunteer Fire Department.

I determined I had Catamenial Epilepsy, and have tried many things. I want to find a fix for this problem. I've been driving since I was 16. On December 7th, I was at a scout camp with my boy, and drank nothing but hot chocolate, and ate all the white flour, etc, they served. I had a major set of seizures one week later.

In addition, my cycles are going crazy. I am no longer on a steady 28 day cycle, and my hormones are not right. The last time I went to a neurologist, he was sympathetic, but told me I could only drive if I could walk a straight line. I could not perform this feat. I've since learned that my medication may have been off, or misdiagnosed. I've eaten no sugar, and I want to be rid of this. Should I become OVER medicated, my body will reject it. My sweet husband has offered to chauffer me around. I'm scheduled to take a test on XXXXXXX 5th to become a 7th grade science teacher. I'll need to be able to drive to commute. I decided to teach, because I want to give something back. I could make good money, but I think my efforts will be better spent on the kids.

Brief Answer:
Clobazam may be good option.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and family history.

Fist of all, I wish to salute you for all your achievements, and hard work you are doing for children's' welfare.

Regarding catamenial epilepsy- seizures occurring during or in relation to periods, clobazam tablets are good option. Clobazam can be started a few days prior to expected date of periods, and stopped when periods stop.

You can undergo an MRI brain and EEG for proper evaluation to find out the cause of epilepsy.

I hope it helps. Please get back if you have any more queries.

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology) XXXXXXX Consultant Neurologist
