What Causes Blurred Vision After Using Gentamicin?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Mar 2017
Question: I am using gentamicin after having cataract surgery on both eyes. My eyes are just "Red" after every use of this using of drops 4 times a day. My right eye was done on 2-21-17 and left on 2-28-17. So even 1st surgery done is as red as the current one. Do you think these eye drops are causing this. I actually could see better in the morning before any drops used. Sorry I am so slow here, but can't hardly see the computer screen here.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are possibly side effects of gentamicin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the query at HealthcareMagic,

I have gone through your history and understand your concern.

The symptoms you are experiencing is probably due to gentamicin.

Gentamicin is associated with blurred vision for sometime after application of drops in eye. It is nothing to be worried about and your vision will return to normal. But avoid driving, using tools or machines while your vision is blurred.

Gentamicin also causes mild irritation and redness of eyes.Mild symptoms do not require discontinuation of the drops.

If the redness and itching are severe it is indicative of possible allergy to the medication. If your symptoms are severe, I'd recommend that you consult your treating doctor to see if another antibiotic is a better choice for you. However do not discontinue the medication without discussing with your doctor first, since your doctor must've determined the benefits from the medication outweighing the risks and side effects.

Hope I was able to answer your question
Please feel free to address any more concerns
Regards ,
Dr.Lekshmi
