What Causes Bleeding After Taking The Morning After Pill?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: Hi. I stopped the 21day pill microgynon on 25th aug. 5 days later i had my withdrawl bleed. I did not continue to take the pills. As i plan to get the implant in. At the end of my withdrawl bleed(2nd sept) we had unprotected sex, however he pulled out before coming. 60 hours later i took the morning after pill just to be extra sure. A week after taking the morning after pill i began bleeding and going into day3 it has became less and brown in colour. However overall this is lighter than my usual period, but the bright red colour has been present. Am i just freaking out is this only an effect of the pills, or could i be pregnant?

Brief Answer:
Not due to pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The lighter bleeding that you are having now is the side effect of the I- pill that you took. It is not suggestive of pregnancy. There is no need to worry. Your next periods can also be delayed due to the effect of the I-pill.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Hi thanks for your reply,
My period came two weeks earlier than expected however? Does that still rule out pregancy. Ending day 3 i have light flow of brown/black discharge.
Also is it normal to have this after coming off the pill?

Brief Answer:
It was a withdrawal bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The light bleeding with black/ brown discharge that you had was a withdrawal bleeding due to I-pill that you took. It was not a normal period. This is not suggestive of pregnancy. You will have your normal period after 2-3 weeks as the period may be delayed due to the effect of I-pill.
It is normal to have mild irregular spotting after coming off the pill.
Hope my answer is helpful.
