What Causes Black Stools When On Harvoni?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: My husband started harvoni two weeks ago for hep c genotype 4. he is also a previous drug user (meth) and recently had a 3 day relapse. he has now been clean 5 days and continued harvoni consistently before, during, and after the relapse. he is also a bit of a hypochondriac. It appears that the harvoni symptoms of diarrhea are fairly rare and I could find nothing regarding grayish black stool. He also ate a carton of blueberries yesterday. I'm grateful he is back in his program, but his depression and worry now are difficult. I think he should just be grateful for the new treatment for hep c and for stopping himself from going down the wrong path too long. could the stools described be a symptom of any of the above? Appreciate your input.

Brief Answer:
Stool test needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through the details you have provided.
The incidence of diarrhoea with harvoni is less than 5% after two weeks.

Is he on any medications for his depressive symptoms?

I would suggest to get a stool test for occult blood done along with stool microscopy examination to look for infective diarrhoea.

I agree that he should stay away from meth.

Most diarrheas are viral and they subside within a week in case the diarrhoea persists for more than a week the he would need further investigations
In the mean time adding yoghurt to his diet and avoiding milk cheese and caffeine and red meat will help with the diarrhea
Hope this helps
