What Causes Altered Sense Of Smell When I Lie Down?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Dec 2016
Question: Hello,
Recently I have been smelling smoke. It smells like cigarette smoke and there is no one in the area smoking and I do no smoke myself. I smell this more when I am in a laying down position. I tend to get panic attacks and feel as though I cannot breathe. Am I crazy??

Brief Answer:
You are not crazy!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your worries and this is not uncommon. This happens severally with many persons and the good news is that it only lasts a short while and completely disappears. It doesn't have any clear treatment as most of it is perception related than an underlying disease condition. You may want to use a perfume/body spray in the meantime so as to consciously impose a known odor than that.

How often do you get panic attacks? Hope they are not related to the thyroid supplementation.

I wish you well and hope to hear more from you.

Thank you for your answer.. Good to know I am not crazy!! :) The panic attacks seem to come just more recently the smell seems over whelming and I feel like I cant catch my breath. Usually when I wake up to the smell. My thyroid is monitored every six months and seems in line with what the doctor is prescribing.

Why cant I smell something like fresh baked bread instead of cigarette smoke. LOL My parents both smoked and I just cant stand that smell at all.. :(

Hopefully it will pass. Meanwhile I just get up when I feel a panic attack is coming on.

Thank you for your time.. It is appreciated!!

Brief Answer:
Would you want something for the panic attacks?

Detailed Answer:
HI,

The smell seems an aura for the panic attacks. I think you need to get a little more relaxed than you are at this time.. If this persists, I will suggest that you get managed for panic attacks.

I wish you well and keep me posted.
