default
Posted on Wed, 1 Oct 2014
Question: I have what I refer to as 'episodes' several times per month. The episodes are times that my hearing fades in and out to the beat of my heart as if you were turning the volume dial on your radio from normal to zero and back a the rate of my heart beat. I have tried to corilate this to my blood pressure with no corolation. and other factors such as, Was i hungry ? Did I just eat? Did I fill in the blank.
Any ideas?

My heart rate is normal during these episodes which last, typically 20-50 minutes each and occur randomly some times several days in a week, some times once a week or less often. As stated it is not corrolated to hunger which is normal and not corrolated to whether or not I have just eaten or had nothing to eat for hours. Digestion and bowel movements and sleep pattern are normal and not related. I have discussed this with every doctor I have seen in the last 10-15 years including cardiologist and ENT and have received no answer nor has any testing or treatment been recommended - just a shrug and comment "I don't know what that is". That is why I 'm asking here.

Brief Answer:
should be benign

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
I have gone through your history, it suggests that you may not be having any diagnosed pathology as yet. It is likely to be benign without any major health implication.

I would like to suggest, you keep yourself occupied,do things of your interest and which makes you happy.
Loneliness is one of the reasons of episodes.
Playing games with small children will make you feel good.
In such type of cases lot of my patients have been benefited by YOGA and MEDITATION.
Hope you will take my advice and try it, your condition is definitely going to improve.
Good Luck.

Loneliness is definitely not the issue. I am married with 4 children, three of which are in the same metro area that I live in and I have 9 grandchildren. Also, I still work part time so I am involved socially through work and family.
I have hypertension and take medication for it. I tried to correlate high or low blood pressure to the episodes but I have measured my blood pressure during multiple episodes and it maybe normal or slightly elevated - again no correlation.
I have suspected a possible allergy to something but I have no known allergies.

Yes,playing games with small children and YOGA or meditation would make me feel good but it doesn't explain my symptoms.

Brief Answer:
If Your condition imrooves it will be explainatory

Detailed Answer:
Hello again
It was nice to hear from you about your routine that you are keeping yourself busy and have a good family and social support.
As our age progresses there are certain chemical and hormonal changes take place in our body, which gradually start affecting us in various ways, Episodes are one of them.Every one and both genders have this, only severity can differ.
This is where it will explain if your condition improves with YOGA and MEDITATION.
Few of Anti hypertensive drugs may have the side effects like this in long run, do keep this thing in mind and see your doctor if he would like to change it.
Hope I have been of some help to you.
Good Day.

These episodes started long before I began taking the blood pressure medication so it can't be side effect of atenolol.

Brief Answer:
It is time to take opinion of a Psychotherapist

Detailed Answer:
Hello again
After all the conversations between us now I have reached to a conclusion you must see a specialist who coordinates between a clinician and the patient also termed as psychotherapist, as none of the specialists have answer to your problem.
He may guide the clinician as to what needs to be done for your episodes.
You may not like the idea but they may have the best answer to your problems.
Hope you will take it in right spirit and get a positive response there.
Good luck.
