What Causes Abdominal Cramping, Sour Stomach And Vomiting Post Intake Of Azithromycin?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Apr 2016
Question: Hi Dr Rynne,
I took my first dose of azithromycin last night at 9pm (2 pills on day one to be followed by one a day days 2-5).
At 3:30am I awoke with severe abdominal cramping and sour stomach. I threw up a couple of times and at 8:45am this morning the cramping is still present and I am very uncomfortable; sweating, nausea. I have read that these are possible side effects. Should they be this severe or am I having an allergic reaction?
Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Side effects... milder form of reaction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
The uncomfortable feeling, abdominal cramping, sour stomach, nausea, vomiting and sweating are side effects of Azithromycin or can say a milder form of allergic reactions.
Allergic reaction would manifest in other ways, like hives skin reactions, swelling of face and tongue and so on.
I would advise you the following:
Stop taking this medicine.
Take a PPI like Omeprazole, Antacid gel 3 tsf at 3 hourly interval and consult your Doctor immediately so that clinical evaluation, further investigations and management can be done.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is gap of communication.
