What Causes A Delay In Menstruation While Treating Panic Disorder?

default
Posted on Sat, 30 Apr 2016
Question: I'm 40 Yrs Female, taking medication for Panic Disorder since last few years. I have missed my periods this feb, they were due on 1st but havent had them yet. The pregnancy test at clinic confirm negative, what could be the reason? My Hb level was 10 grams the last time I tested a couple months ago. A local gyno recommend Ferrous Ascorbate & Folic Acid tablets.
My periods are always a week early or late, though this time it has been more than 3 weeks so I got a urine test done which confirmed negative for pregnancy.

Brief Answer:
do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome HCM,

The Iron and Folic acid can definitely increase your Haemoglobin if taken regularly and for 3 months atleast.

Sometimes medications for panic disorders can affect hormonal levels which can cause delayed ovulation and prolonged cycles.

Since you have taken these medications for panic disorder for quite a few years I would advise you to check certain hormone levels.

These are Serum TSH to check for thyroid imbalance.

SerumProlactin as this hormone is usually affected by medications used for panic disorders.

Also you should check for Serum FSH and LH levels as these can also cause delay in ovulation and irregular cycles.

If you want to get your period immediately consider taking Tab. Duphaston 3 times a day for 3 days and then you should be getting your period in a week's time.

But it is necessary to do the hormonal test to know the cause.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
